Critically Rare American Buff Geese - Goslings Soon Arriving at a Farm Near You!

Our first 2015 American Buff Goose EGG arrived today so we'll have lots of fluffy cuties soon.  Send us an email at littleedenheirloomfarm@zoho.com and let us know if you would like to be on the waiting list and how many. The cost per gosling is $15 each, straight run. If you can't make it to Crawfordville we can meet you in Tallahassee on Monday or Wednesday.  Mondays at the New Sunshine Farmers' Market in Southwood near the Florida Dept. of Health from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. and Wednesdays at the Organic Growers' Market at Lake Ella from noon til dusk.  Tallahassee pickup must be prepaid so to encourage the buyer to not forget as we don't want the wee ones to just sit in a box all day.

Don't miss the opportunity to have some of these rare and beautiful geese.  They are docile, a little testy during spring mating but otherwise sometimes noisy but all the time curious and great weeders/grass eaters.

If you can't have one of these beauties but would like to support our efforts, we will start bringing feathers to the Farmers' Markets.  Some we'll have words stamped on them, i.e., "LOVE", "FOREVER", etc., others will be plain, natural and beautiful.  Breeds will include feathers of chicken, geese and/or guinea.  You are welcome to contact for shipping feathers to you.

The American Buff Goose is on the critical list of heritage breeds at the Livestock Conservancy Organization.  Ron and I are striving to help as many breeds as we can from becoming extinct and will do so more and more as we are able to expand with more property for roomy pens.  We love animals and aim to help preserve more of these beautiful heritage livestock and poultry breeds.

Learn more about this beautiful and docile goose at http://www.livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/buffgoose.

Thank you so much for supporting our mission!

Shiitake Mushroom Growing

A couple months ago we were approached at the Organic Growers' Market asking of our interest in assisting the USDA in a project of putting to good use some of the non native invasive tree species we have growing in our area. Hence the edible mushroom project began. Today we spent the afternoon hours with a gentleman from the USDA about mushroom growing.  We dodged lightening and by the end of the day were completely soaking wet looking at trees, choosing the "right ones for the job" of Chinaberry, mimosa, (the Chinese Tallow will come from another local property) along with shittake's favorite home, the native species, water oak for growth comparison.  While mushrooms are a long season crop Ron and I are excited about having this as a new crop here at Little Eden Heirloom Farm.  Tomorrow we cut trees and begin the process and will keep you apprised as to the happenings of our future crops of shiitake mushrooms.
